Striped Bass Killer! | The Hottest Fly for Striper
Every once in a while you find a bait that just plain works for you. In my case, it is the Haggerty Lures Lefty’s Deceiver Flies when fishing FlyCore for Striped Bass.
If you aren’t familiar with fishing FlyCore, you are basically twitching flies at the end of leadcore line. By twitching, I mean you are grabbing your line and giving it a good, constant yank, making your fly jump and dart all over.
Most of the stripers out here in our Southern California reservoirs are down fairly deep. 30-50 feet deep wouldn’t be that uncommon when chasing these fish. The leadcore line helps you get down to those depths. Most of the big striper are feeding on live shad and other baitfish. The key is to find a baitfish imitation that is large and stout enough for these hard fighting, brutal fish.
In this review I am going to talk about the Haggerty Lures Lefty’s Deceiver Flies. These are flies that I have been using for quite some time, but it is time to tell the world about these highly effective baits.
“Haggerty Lures is a small family-owned business. Every fly and jig offered on our site is poured, painted & hand-tied by Bill or Lori Haggerty at the time of purchase.”
Here are the specs of the Haggerty Lures Fly that I will be reviewing today.
First Look
As with all of my bait reviews, I like to take a first look at the packaging. Be it giant swimbaits, iron or frogs, Flies are no different. So lets take a look at the packaging. As you can see below, the packaging is pretty straight forward. When you purchase these, you are buying a pack of 2. There are two baits in a small ziploc style back, with a simple label with model size and contact info. Simple!
Eye of the Haggerty Lures Flies
In reviewing the fly, I will start at the eye and work my way down through the head to the body and ultimately to the hook. There isn’t a ton of “features” to talk about when talking flies, so I’ll add a bunch of imagery as well.
The first thing we will look at is the eye of the hook. As you can see below, these are a stout, saltwater hook fly. In fact, they are tied on a 5/0 hook and designed for Tarpon and other mean beasts.
As you can see below, there really is no overlap in the thread wrapping onto the eye. That is always great to see and a sign of a great fly tier.
As you work from the eye of the hook, you make it to the head and eye of the bait. The head has some nice bulk to it and features a nice large eye. It all seems to be epoxied nicely with no exposed threads. The epoxy just touches the hook.
Full Bodied Bait
The Haggerty Lures Lefty’s Deceiver Flies have quite the full body. The material used gives it a nice full side to side as well as top to bottom full figure when dry. When wet, they do slim up. When you are twitching these, as described above, the bait gets a real small profile on the pull, and fluffs back up on the pause, if that makes sense
The dimensions of the 5/0 Saltwater Streamer are pretty impressive. The overall length is just about 6″ from tip to tip. The body bodes a full 3″ from back to belly feathers and fluffed up has a width of close to an inch or more.
Here is the Haggerty Lures Lefty’s Deceiver Fly in the palm of my hand for size reference.
Getting Hooked
Now as mentioned, the Haggerty Lures Lefty’s Deceiver fly that I purchased is the 5/0 size. I don’t think these are a name brand hook at all, but a nice stout, heavy duty hook none the less.
Time to Load Up!
One of the coolest feature of the Haggerty Lures Lefty’s Deceiver Flies is the price. They come in at $9.99 for a 2-pack! That’s right….$9.99. Crazy!! And as mentioned, these are all hand tied by Bill Haggerty himself. Pretty impressive.
Where Can I Find Haggery Lures?
You can check out the entire Haggerty Lure lineup on their website HERE. They have quite a bit more than just flies. Unfortunately, I couldn’t find these particular flies on their site. I could only find them, as well as MANY others here on Amazon.
Final Thoughts
Overall, I really like these flies. I have purchased many over the years that have accounted for many, many big striped bass. One cool thing that has been mentioned is that these are all hand tied by Bill and Lori Haggerty. In fact, I had a recent issue with an order, reached out to Haggerty, and had a response immediately. Bill tied up some flies, epoxied and got them in the mail to me immediately. I had them from issue to my door in less than 5 days. Very solid service right there too!
