HD Baits Unleashed: Crafting Success, One Bait at a Time

I can’t speak for everyone, but for me, there is nothing like a great paddle tail soft swimbait. I was lucky enough to be gifted a few baits from a company that is sponsoring a Southern California saltwater bass series called Spotty Bowl. The name of the swimbait company is HD Baits. What does the HD stand for you ask? HD stands for High Desert.

Now I love to fish my soft plastic baits in a variety of different ways and riggings. From standard ball style jig heads to Underspins like the Berkley Fusion 19, and also on A-Rigs to name a few.

In general, I would give you a full run through on these baits. From packaging, to hang tags to the baits themselves. Unfortunately, the package I received was just a variety pack of HD Baits Battle Tails with a smattering of colors and sizes. One thing I can tell you though, they get bit!

In the image above, you can get a look at what I believe is their header card they use for their baits when they are for sale. I did notice that you can buy individual baits or in bulk on their hdbaits.com website. So not really sure what the final packaging actually is on these.

Here is a look at the back of that hangtag which has their social links.

Looking at the HD Baits Battle Tails

Lets go ahead and take a look at the baits themselves. HD Baits offers a 4″ and 3″ paddle tail design. In the image below you can get a general look at the HD Baits Battle Tails in 4″. First off, Battle Tail is a pretty cool name for a bait. As you can see, the HD Baits Battle Tail baits are a soft plastic swimbait with a bit of a belly and a large paddle tail. Each of the baits are fully ribbed from top to bottom in the 4″ and from what I can tell, smooth on the 3″.

Another thing you’ll notice in the image below is that they have a great amount of color and glitter used in their baits. Multiple tones show up nicely in these baits.

Top Down Look

Lets start at the front end of the bait and take a look at what we are working with.

As you can see, the baits have a rounded head end that is nice and firm and strong enough to hold a screw in hook design. They are also perfect for a flush lead head if you so choose.

Here is another angle looking from the nose of the bait back down the body and to the tail.

Tale of the Tail

As mentioned, these are paddle tail baits, and what is the most important part of the paddle tail bait…well, the paddle tail. Lets take a look at the paddle tails themselves on the HD Baits Battle Tail.

HD Baits

In the shot above, you can get a feel for the width and size of the paddle tail in comparison to the narrow portion below the main body. These baits have a nice and powerful kick to them that make some great vibration.

Below you will get another look at the paddle tail on the baits as well as get the first look at the 3″ version that they offer.

And the last shot I have is a side by side shot of the 4″ and 3″ next to each other.

As you can see above, the larger 4″ bait feature the prominent rib design while the smaller 3″ version is rib-less, and nice and smooth. I tied the 3″ version onto a small Cool Baits underspin and it had great action.

Wrapping up HD Baits

A little further up in this blog I mentioned that these things get bit. Well yes, they certainly do. I fished the larger 4″ on the Berkley Fusion 19 underspins and the Spotties ate them up. The light colors did excellent in the stained water of Newport Harbor. I am excited to drop the darker colors on some pilings on my next outing.

I find the HD Baits to be just about perfect in terms of softness and rigidity. The feel soft to the touch, but seemed to be very durable to the tough task of holding up to spotted bay bass which can demolish baits pretty good.
Overall, I like them!
