FishLab Weedless Bio-Spoon | A New Classic

Every once in a while a bait comes along that makes a small tweak or two, and becomes a better mouse trap. FIshLab Tackle, based out of Southern California might have just done that with the new FIshLab Weedless Bio-Spoon.

This family of baits was introduced at ICAST 2021 and has slowly made it in to the market. With the world the way it is, and the production issues around the globe, I can’t even imagine the challenges of trying to introduce new product right now.

“The Bio-Spoon Weedless spoons are ideal for tight inshore waters and eelgrass.  The weedless design keeps you from getting hung up on structure as you cast for big fish. The extra sharp, tournament-grade hooks are not plated keeping the hooks sharper and stronger” states Mike Bennett, Product Manager for FishLab Tackle.

There are plenty of spoons on the market, but a solidly put together, well thought out spoon is sometimes a little hard to come by.

Here are the specs of the FishLab Weedless BIo-Spoon that I will be reviewing.

Specs

First Glance

When you first walk into a store and look for a particular product, the first thing you notice about it is the packaging. Of course, people say that most lures are designed to lure in anglers rather than built to catch fish. Packaging is no different.

The FishLab Tackle packaing is nice yet simple. The front of the package clearly states what the product is. The side view of the spoon does make it a bit hard to identify if you are looking at it straight on.

The back of the packing is pretty clean as well. It features the product name, and some basic specs of the FishLab Weedless Bio-Spoon.

As stated above, I wish they would have given the spoon a bit of an angle inside the front just so that you can see what it is when looking directly at the package. The text states it, but we are all visual creatures, and seeing is believing.

In the Weeds – Deep Look – FishLab Weedless Bio-Spoon

In this review, I will go component by component of the Bio-Spoon and let you know the good and bad of these spoons.

Weedless and Tangle Free

I’ll go through this bait starting right at the top, and work our way down to the bottom going piece by piece.

Starting at the top, the first thing we come to is a nice, heavy duty swivel attached to a split ring.

As you can see in the photo above, FishLab uses a nice stout swivel attached to a medium-heavy split ring. Since spoons are pretty erratic and you do get some spin, it is great to see these components on this bait.

Check Out That Body

The body of the bait is pretty straight forward. It has a classic spoon deisgn with a classic, clean finish. The FishLab Weedless Bio-Spoon is available in six total colors and three sizes, but only one lenghth. The three weights on these are 1/8, 1/4 and 1/2 ounce and all three are 2 1/4″ in length.

The bait has what ends up looking like an “eye” on the front, that is actually the connection point of the hook and weedless system.

Looking toward the rear of the spoon it widens out and you will find the FishLab logo right at the rear.

Get Hooked

At the very end of the bait you will come across the hook, which is a nice, heavy duty hook designed for inshore fishing as well as chasing giant pike. I don’t know the actual hook size used, but they are stout.

The hook goes through the spoon then leads up the belly of the body to the connection point, where you will find the wired, “weedless” system on this bait.

Final Thoughts on the FishLab Weedless Bio-Spoon

Overall these are very nice spoons.

Having spent plenty of time down in Louisiana chasing redfish and speckled trout, I know the need for a high end, well built spoon. These are just that. The components and overall selection of colors do make this perfect for that gulf fishery as well as offering the same sizes and weights in the popular freshwater colors for the big pike I mentioned earlier.

Comparison Shopping

These are starting to get more and more readily available as they have only been in the market for a few months, but it is always best to do a little comparison shopping. Here are a few options. The spoons seem to range from $5.39 to $5.99
