UV Dead Eye Jigs from Pitbull Tackle – From Trout to Tuna –
With Rockfish Season right around the corner, it is time to go through the ol’ tackle box and cleaning up your deep drop selections and really dial it in. One jig that you might want to add to your arsenal is the new Pitbull Tackle UV Dead Eye Jigs.
From Trout to Tuna, the UV Dead Eye Jigs seem to have you covered. To me, that seems like quite the spread, and a pretty bold statement. But according to the PItbull Tackle website, these jigs do just that.
“From vertical jigging Cutthroat Trout in the high desert of Nevada to retrieving them just below the surface near foaming Tuna in California, the Pitbull Tackle UV Dead Eye Jig is a must-have in any angler’s tackle”
Bold yes. Wrong…no!
At first glance, these jigs seem to be well made and look great on the rack. Oh, and the price tag is pretty bold as well. And bold in a good way, coming in with a starting price at only $4.99. Yes, $4.99!!
Here are the specs of the jig that I will be reviewing.
First Glance
When I first saw these jigs, they certainly piqued my interest. Maybe it was the lighting, but the paintjob on these really stood out amongst a sea of jigs.
The packaging is pretty straight forward with a hang-tag and exposed jig. What I like about that, is that I can actually feel the jig, rub my fingernail on the paint and body to feel the texture and get an idea of how it will move through the water.
Deep Drop – Deep Look – Pitbull Tackle UV Dead Eye Jigs
In this review, I’ll go component by component looking at the PItbull Tackle UV Dead Eye Jig and giving you my honest opinion on these jigs. But to give you a hint, these will certainly be joining the gang of jigs within my tackle box going forward.
Head, Shoulders, Knees and Toes
With this jig, I will start at the head and work my way down to the hook going component by component.
On the head of this jig is a stout ring for you to tie directly to the jig. There is no split ring included, so if that is something you like on your jigs, you’ll have to add it yourself. No issue there all. Grabbing the jig eye by the nose with some pliers, I wiggled it back and forth and it does seem quite strong.
The Eye’s Have It
In thinking Dead Eye, I always think Walleye, as Dead Eye is what they are commonly referred to as. But this jig looks like it had a late night out and got up way too early to go fishing. Something a lot of us can relate to.
The eye on this jig is a 3-D eye that is indented but protrudes from the bait just a bit. The bait also has great facial features. Does this really make a difference in catching fish? No idea. Let’s go with yes.
Body of Lies
Moving down the bait we’ll take a look at the body. The pain on this jig looks to be well done. I see some foil for flash as well as a textured finish to give the bait a little more movement.
The belly has the most flash with the flash-foil pattern that draws in fish from bigger distances.
As mentioned at the beginning, I love to run my fingernail over a bait to feel the finish and texture, and this bait has nice texture. Nothing too exaggerated, but a nice texture to it.
Speaking of paint, the UV Dead Eye Jigs have…UV. Go figure. According to the PItbull Tackle website, each jig is created with both Glow-in-the-Dark and UV-enhancement. Pretty cool. Especially if you are deep dropping these for your favorite deep-water species. Thinking of rockfish in the coming months, to lake trout through the ice in the dead of winter in 160+ feet of depth. This will be key.
But…the Butt
Getting down to the butt section of this bait, you come to another stout eyelet, but with a heavy duty split ring. I am not sure what split ring they are using, but it is certainly strong and will work perfectly for your fun-sized tuna.
Now to get Hooked
The PItbull Tackle UV Dead Eye Jig comes standard with an ultra-sharp 3X treble hook for “unmatched strength and better hook-up ratios.” I don’t think they name the hook manufacturer on these, so at $4.99, I’m guessing it isn’t a major name brand hook. But that said, I did grab the pliers and give these hooks a tug and they seem very strong. Good to see.
Will I Fish it?
In short, Yes! As mentioned at the beginning, these jigs will certainly be joining some of their cousins in my tackle box. A cool note on these is that they offer a 2oz, 4oz, 6oz and 8oz weights, and they offer 8 total different color options.
With rockfish season right around the corner, these dudes will get a workout. You probably don’t need to do this, but tip them with squid and you are on. I also can’t wait for next years Colonet schedule to kick off for deep dropping Ling Cod and Yellowtail. Oh, and if the tuna season is as good as the past couple of seasons, and yellowfin show up this fall, these will be in the lineup to put a little Ahi on the grill this year.
